Details for Cumberland Invite tournament this Saturday

We’re playing in our first tournament of the year this Saturday at the Cumberland Fairgrounds. The Cumberland Invite is thrown every year by our friends at Cumberland MS Ultimate and is a fun day filled with three games played back-to-back. We’re playing games against two teams from Maine Coast Waldorf as well as against Cape Elizabeth. Beyond that, there will also be teams from South Portland, Portland, Greely, and Scarborough there playing on Saturday.

Our first game is at 9am but please plan on arriving at the Fairgrounds at 8:30 to get ready and warm up. Our last game ends at 1:15am.

Here is the field layout for the fields at the Cumberland Fairgounds (map to fields):

Our schedule for Saturday is:

Game 1: 9-10:15 against Maine Coast Waldorf (1) on Field 1

Game 2: 10:30-11:45 against Cape Elizabeth (1) on Field 2

Game 3: 12:00-1:15 against Maine Coast Waldorf (2) on Field 4

Players should plan on bringing cleats, two water bottles, a disc, sunscreen, snacks for the day, and warm clothes for between games and on the sidelines. The weather looks to be nice on Saturday with cloudy, but dry skies, and temperatures in the mid 50s. Fold-up chairs or blankets are nice to sit on when cleating up.

Please be careful while crossing the racetrack onto the fields in Cumberland. If the horses are running, they have right of way 100% of the time. Always look up both ways before crossing in Cumberland.

Three games are a lot of ultimate to play in one stretch, so players should get a good night sleep on Friday night and eat a healthy breakfast on game day.

Callahan Award nomination videos!

The Callahan Award is the highest honor awarded to college ultimate players and is given to one male and one female player each year who best epitomizes the qualities of high skill, talent, good spirit, sportsmanship, and leadership. One of the fun things about the Callahan Award for ultimate fans is the pile of promotional videos put together by friends and teammates of potential Callahan Award winners. The videos pull together each players highlights and are set to music and edited to be exciting to watch.

Here are the Callahan videos from a few of the past year’s winners as well as some of this years videos from other college stars.

Enjoy!

Intramural starts on Saturday!

Get excited! The Intramural Team’s first practice and game is this Saturday, May 30th! We’ll be gathering at our normal spot on the grass fields behind the Falmouth High School, next to the turf and track, and playing from 4-6pm.

I have made some changes to the start time for Monday Intramural. Boys lacrosse runs on Mondays until 6:30, so we’ll be starting at 6pm starting on Monday, May 9th, to give the lax boys a chance to miss the least amount of game time as possible. Each Intramural session will start with a half hour of warm-ups, so the boys lacrosse players shouldn’t miss too much game time with our 6pm start times. The sun sets a little too early for us to start at 6pm on our first Monday meeting, on May 2nd, so we’re sticking to our 5:30pm start time for just that one day.

Apologies for the confusion here. As always, email me at sheagunther@gmail.com if I can clarify anything.

Pro game: AUDL— Dallas Roughnecks vs Austin Sol, 4/2/16

The Dallas Roughnecks play in the AUDL, one of the two professional ultimate leagues in operation (the other is Major League Ultimate), have built an incredible lineup this year with some of the best names in ultimate on the roster. Built around living legend and captain Beau Kittredge, the Roughnecks round out their starting corps with Jimmy Mickle (my favorite player), Dylan Freechild, Kurt Gibson, and Cassidy Rasmussen. All huge names in ultimate.

You should note that there are a few rule differences between middle school ultimate and the AUDL:

  • Double team defensive coverage is allowed in the AUDL but not in middle school ultimate.
  • Games in the AUDL run a certain length of time, not a certain number of points. In middle school ultimate, we play games to 13 or 15.
  • Games in the AUDL are run with observers/referees who make calls. In middle school ultimate, we make all of our own calls.

Bonus video: Beau jumping over a guy:

Bonus bonus: I drafted Beau on my summer league team waaaaay back in the day. It was his first year living in Colorado and I drafted him because he was tall. We ended up winning the league championship that year. I’m the beardless guy holding the disc up, Beau is second from the left. My only ultimate claim-to-fame.
